Tattoos are markings made by inserting inedible ink onto one’s skin. In this era tattoos are worn as a fashion statement among men, while tattoos on animals are used for identification and branding. Tattooing has been practiced since centuries worldwide. Among certain tribes in different parts of the world, tattoos have religious significance and are worn on the face . Tattoos are considered as taboo by many folks which one of the reasons which makes tattooing so fascinating.

Its purposes:

Spiritual – In early times, tattoos had a lot religious benefits attached to it. Pre – German Celtic and European tribes wore tattoos to mark important occasions. Some of the Egyptian mummies were also adorned with tattoos. Today even though many people wear tattoos for fashion. There are some who wear tattoos to mark his /her love to a fellow individual. Some gangs and groups have symbol on its members to swear allegiance to the group.
The Nazi concentration camp had its prisoners forcibly tattooed. Each prisoner was tattooed with a number on his forearm. Some prisons today also follow this practice. However this is being opposed by a lot of human right activists who feel that this is inhuman.

Tattoos have experienced resurgence in popularity in many parts of the world. It is very popular particularly in North and South America, Japan and Europe. It is also popular in the Asian region because of the effect of western culture here. There a now a lot of full time tattoo artists who charge a high amount to design one . There are also courses that folks can enroll to become full time tattoo artist. The quality of the ink and the design has had improvements through the times. However there is a dark side to this art. Getting a tattoo is an extremely painful process. Unhygienic needles used by careless tattoo artists can cause AIDS and other diseases to individuals. People who generally wear tattoos are considered as outcasts and rebels. A person who has a visible tattoo and applies for a job is frowned on.

However in spite of the above disadvantages many teens and some young adults die to wear tattoos. They have also gained prominence because is worn a lot by rock musicians and actors. A tattoo also signifies a rebel lifestyle to many folks.

However one has to think before getting a tattoo because it being permanent. These are the reasons that make this art mysterious and fascinating.
